Short Description:

The Documentation Service belongs to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) - Italian National Institute of Health, the main institute of technical-scientific research, control and advice in public health.The institutional task of the Documentation Service is the retrieval of biomedical, chemical, toxicological and public health online information. It is the National Reference Center for MEDLARS (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System), according to the agreement signed in 1978 with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) of Bethesda,USA. It also organizes courses on the various aspects and problems of the information resources available on the net and on electronic media in the biomedical and technical-scientific sectors. It is the only Italian dealer for DOCLINE, the NLM document delivery system. Since 2001, the Documentation Service has been involved in a project for collecting and disseminating information on bioethical issues, through an integrated electronic system called SIBIL (Bioethics on Line Informative System) available at http://www.iss.it/sibi.
Documents indexed in the SIBIL database are over 6,000 at February 2007.
